Registered domestic partners must be treated as “family members” under employment policies due to a bill signed into law by the governor on May 18, 2009. The 2009 Washington minimum wage is $8.55 per hour, and is expected to have a cost-of-living increase on January 1, 2010. Tipped employees in Washington must be paid the full state minimum wage. Washington break laws require that each employee have a paid 10-minute break for each 4 hours worked, no later than the third hour. In addition, the employee is entitled to a 30-minute meal period between the second and fifth hour, on a shift that is more than 5 hours long.*
